The Artist

Mark Wolsky is an award-winning photographer specializing in and landscape, wildlife and nature photography. Mark spends much of his time at his cabin deep in the blue ridge mountains of Virginia, as well as traveling to capture the profound beauty of planet earth.

Background

Mark’s father was an avid outdoorsman and, as a result, Mark was introduced to photography, bird watching and backpacking at the age of eight. By the time he was seventeen, Mark had hiked most of the trails in Shenandoah National Park with his brother.

During these backpacking excursions, Mark learned how to respectfully live with nature and developed a set of valuable outdoor skills, including conservation and survival, which would later serve as the foundation for his mountaineering exploits.

While they were still in their teens, Mark and his brother began to challenge themselves by backpacking and photographing in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia during winter months, in order to develop their survival skills in more adverse conditions.

Mark was fortunate to have lived 16 years abroad, in a number of countries including Turkey, Germany and Canada. At the age of sixteen, thirsty to experience new cultures, Mark backpacked through Europe and Africa for three months with camera in hand.  He also has skied and backpacked extensively in Switzerland and Austria, which helped solidify his great appreciation for the beauty of the mountains and the natural world.

After graduating from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Mark settled in Northern Virginia as a technology industry marketing professional. In his thirties, Mark became re-acquainted with his passion for backpacking and photography. He hiked extensively in George Washington National Forest and Dolly Sods Wilderness during winter months and then turned toward winter mountaineering as his primary sport.

Mark has made five successful solo summits of Mt. Washington between December and February, a very challenging time of year on the summit reputed to have the worst weather of any permanently inhabited place on earth. Mark has also climbed extensively during the winter in Colorado where he has summited 15+ “fourteeners” including Snowmass Mountain, Maroon Peak, Mt. Lincoln and Long’s Peak. Mark also successfully summited Pico de Orizaba in Mexico.

Mark has also been a top age group triathlete competing in numerous sprint, Olympic and IM 70.3 triathlons, century rides and running events in the U.S. and the United Kingdom.

Mark has been fortunate to have seen and experienced many of the world’s cultures and natural wonders. The goal of Mark Wolsky Photography, LLC, is to share his global experience and appreciation of nature’s beauty through the medium of photography.
