Cedar Waxwing

Cedar waxwings are a gregarious bird that usually travel in fairly large groups. They migrate into our region in the late spring and stay the summer. They feed on raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries and blueberries, all of which mature at different times during the summer to ensure a constant supply of high glycemic nutrition for many species of bird and animal, as well as us. Mary makes different jams from the berries we harvest on our property. We once saw a cedar waxwing sit on the top of a white pine tree for a week waiting to be reunited with its family and we happened to be out on the back deck having coffee on the morning when the other waxwings collected their lost family member. It was truly a magical moment where the birds seemed to show their joy in the way they moved and flitted around their lost traveler.
